HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE BIBLE #01: THE CREATION

by Adventista Subversivo

During this study, we will use the basic rules of Hermeneutics: science responsible for the analysis, understanding and interpretation of the Sacred Scriptures. I ask that those who accompany these articles, be patient and stop in the context of the subject of the article, we will address each of the biblical aspects on the subject, therefore, wait for all articles. This one is just an introduction and a call for reflection. Here we go:

It is common to hear the phrase, in a sarcastic tone: “God created Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve; God created man and woman. ”

I have no doubt that such a statement is true, homosexuals and heterosexuals are either men or women. We were all made in the image and likeness of the Creator!

So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1.27

Human sexuality is complex and goes beyond the notions of male and female, it goes beyond the notion of man and woman. In the act of creation, we observed one of the main functions of human beings at that time: procreation and population of the Earth:

“God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it...” - Genesis 1:28

Given this fact, we conclude that the text of Genesis is a description of what is seen as a standard for most and not a prescription of what must be obeyed by all people, because it would be natural today for brothers to marry brothers,  which is neither natural nor advisable. In the same way, other questions arise: should everyone get married and have children? Are those who choose to remain unmarried in sin for not marrying?

"That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife..." Genesis 2.24

Are infertile people in sin because of their inability to bear children? Certainly not.  The context involved in the creation is unique, the current reality is a very different context from that. To carry the description of Genesis as a rule to the present day would be inconsistent. Account must also be taken of the fact that the Bible was written in a patriarchal, culturally "macho" context. A subject that we will discuss later.

The description of Genesis, demonstrates the IDEAL OF GOD in the creation of the human being before sin entered the Earth.  There, the human being is created specifically to procreate the Earth and increase the human family. In the context of Genesis, incest was natural and practiced freely so that the planet could be populated. At that time, the human being still lived without experience in basic notions of feeling, relationship or order of civilization. The experiments were just beginning. It was a "start", therefore, a completely specific text.

After sin entered the world, as well as the increase in human experiences on Earth, we observed that sexuality started to have other aspects and not only serve for the procreation of human beings. After all, sex pleasure, is also God's creations.

The questions then remain: What about the sexual prohibitions we find in the Pentateuch? What about Sodom and Gomorrah? What about Paul's texts?

In the next article, we'll talk about Sodom and Gomorrah. After all, why were these cities destroyed?

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.”  Colossians 3:15
